About the City of Eudora F.D.'s EMS

The fire department's emergency medical service is a joint venture between Douglas County and the city of Eudora, Kansas.  The department's medical service came about during the summer of 2007 when the two government agencies put their heads together and developed a plan to enhance EMS first responder services to the eastern end of Douglas County.  The final agreement brought about a county agency operating under the management of the City of Eudora's fire department.

The newly created agency was called Eudora Community EMS.  Though successful in its operation, it soon became apparent that it would be easier to consolidate Eudora Community EMS into the fire department.  This made both financial and operational sense.  So, on July 1, 2008, Eudora Community EMS became a complete part of the City of Eudora Fire Department with Douglas County playing a supporting role.

The fire department's EMT's are volunteers managed by the City of Eudora's Fire Chief.  First Responders and EMT's volunteer in twelve and twenty-four hour shifts to provide coverage for the city of Eudora.  The members of the department carry pagers and respond from home when an emergency arises.  The volunteers, consisting of paramedics, EMT's and Emergency Medical Responders, provide on-scene medical care until an ambulance can arrive from nearby Lawrence.  Medical oversight and training is provided by Lawrence Douglas County Fire Medical

The agency operates one SUV which is used by one of the shift's on-duty EMT's.  The SUV is taken home and used as a quick response vehicle.  It responds direct to each scene while the rest of the on-call shift meet at the fire station.  A fire engine with additional medical personnel and equipment then rolls to the scene as well.  In addition, more support personnel and equipment can be dispatched from the fire department for car wrecks and critical calls.

Professional Care

There are several levels of emergency medical care available outside of the hospital.  These levels range from first aid up to Paramedic certification.  Most of the fire department's care givers are trained at the Emergency Medical Technician level.  Several are at the next highest level of EMT-Intermediate.  EMT-I's can do advanced procedures such as starting IV fluids.  The department has personnel in Paramedic training and often has Paramedics on the volunteer staff.
