Volunteer Recruitment Page

An emergency call to 911 is expected to bring help immediately.  The baby sitter with the choking baby, the victim in the smashed car, or the young couple watching their first home burn all expect a quick and effective response from us, the volunteer firefighters and EMTs.  So, what happens when members of the community no longer volunteer?  Who will help these citizens in their hour of greatest despair?

Please take a moment to seriously consider donating your time to help the residents of the Eudora Community.  Is being a volunteer time consuming?  Yes.  Is there a lot of training involved?  You betcha!  Do you miss meals, sleep, work, and family time?  Yep!  Is it worth it to stop a fire or save a life?  Absolutely!!!

Frequently asked recruitment questions:

1)  Do you accept out of town volunteers?

-Yes, we do.  There are several out of district volunteers already on the department.  These volunteers stay at the station, friend's homes, or with relatives during their shift.  A small bunk room is provided for on shift personnel.

 2)  I'd like to be an EMT, but I don't want to fight fires.  Can I still join?

-Yes!  There is no requirement for any member to do both.  Some prefer firefighting, some prefer EMS.  Most do both.  Please note that our fire and EMS personnel work, respond, and train together.  There is an expectation that each specialty will work with and support the other.

3)  I'm not very strong and I can't pass a strenuous physical agility test.  But, I really want to volunteer!

-The physical agility assessment is not geared toward strength, endurance, or athletic physical fitness.  The assessment, which is untimed, ensures that each applicant can do the basic fire or EMS tasks for which they've applied.  For instance, an EMT applicant will demonstrate that they can perform two minutes of CPR chest compressions.  This is in keeping with the American Heart Association's recommendation for only two minutes of CPR per provider during a cardiac arrest.  A firefighter applicant will crawl along a hose line in full gear with a blacked out face mask.  This simulates the real conditions a firefighter will train in and operate under during a fire.

The physical agility assessment also checks that applicants can balance, coordinate, climb, kneel, lift, crawl, etc.  You may obtain a copy of the agility format for EMS or fire by contacting the fire department.  The assessment is simple and does not require strenuous exercise.

Unsure if you want to be a firefighter or an EMT? Do both!

Food for thought...

It takes volunteers to staff our equipment.  If you don't volunteer, who will?

Someone just like you took the giant leap to become an EMT or firefighter.  Someone just like you took the first step and gained a new level of confidence.  Someone just like you learned how to weather a crisis.  Someone just like you made a commitment to help their neighbor in a time of need.  It's people like you who leave work, supper, baseball games, and church to respond when the pager beeps.  Our community is depending on people just like you.  Without you, all we have are shiny red trucks. . . empty, unusable shiny red trucks.  It's not the trucks that make a fire department.  It's the people.  People just like you.

Help us with staffing our fire department.  Become a volunteer!
